Hey wood we need some help

Hey wood umm a clan member Matzilla has a problem with his modem.

I know nothing about any technical shit but I know you do. He says his download speed is fine but upload speed is shit. He usually has red lag in games and it takes some time for his connection to get up to green.

W00D 03-24-2007 11:17 AM

ask him to read my hosting matches post and do the speed test, identify if he has a router and what model number/version it is. all described in the post. where does he live etc, if hes in singapore trying to connect to someone in liverpool, it just wont be pretty.

NJPunker23 03-24-2007 11:17 AM

Yo, i made sir wood aware of the issue, heres a couple things mat can do in prep for master woods help, he needs to figure out what type of router he has, the revision of his router (this can usually be found on the bottom of the router, or back on a sticker resembling the sorts of a UPC lots of numbers.)

Also run a speed test from here )requires flash 8

I know he lives in Minnestoa. Can't spell damn it. I will tell him to look on here.

1584 download
189 upload - it said "ISP Upload compression was detected"

It's cable, not DSL

Fallen JeStEr 03-24-2007 07:08 PM

bump

W00D 03-24-2007 08:18 PM

who's your isp? ive never even really heard of ISP upload compression detected... and for a cable modem 1500/200 is slow as hell. so ya tell me isp maybe theres a problem with your connection cause i really dont think your isp has 1500/256 cable service its prolly much higher and you have wiring trouble

MattZilla20 03-25-2007 04:40 PM

Okay, just tested again.

With router plugged in (2 computer and xbox hooked up)
Download: 982
Upload: 108

This Computer plugged straight into modem:
Download: 1078
Upload: 121

*Same server in Forth Worth, Texas was used*

My ISP is Mediacom (mchsi.com), and I think it should be a LOT better then this for $60 a month.

**Update**
Wood, I read your hosting thread, and decided to test on speakeasy.

Results (w/router):
Download: 4707
Upload: 239

Results (w/out router):
Download: 4972
Upload: 240

**********************
I checked my NAT settings on the xbox, and it says "Strict"
**********************
*Another update:

I updated the router firmware and now on my xbox the NAT setting says "moderate"
**********************

Thanks for all your help Wood and Jester, hopefully I can get my "red dot" resolved.

Holy shit. 1k download.... I'd be contacting you ISP and talking to them about it or switching your ISP. That's is insanely slow for cable. I have a download of around 15k

W00D 03-25-2007 06:37 PM

to fix your moderate problems you need to foward the ports for your xbox... if you go into your xbox's networking blade it should tell you your xbox's IP address on your network which shoudl be something like 192.168.1.5 if you can figure out how to get into your routers administration page and how to foward a port, put the ports xbox live uses:

The following ports must be available for Xbox Live to operate correctly:
• UDP 88
• UDP 3074
• TCP 3074

and foward them so they go to your xbox by putting the IP address of your xbox in where it says where to foward the ports too.

Another easy way that might work if uPnP works properly on your router, would be enabling uPnP which is universal plug and play which should automatically foward the ports.

I can help you further if i know your router model.

i also looked at your ISP's internet speeds and it looks like you ahve the 5meg service which would seem right with your download speeds and upload speeds. make sure you have the 5meg service tho cause it doesnt tell me prices and 60 a month is a little high IMO for 5meg service when theres a 10 meg option.

ok if your paying 60 a month then thats supposed to be the 10meg service cause the 5 meg service is 45 a month. id say get a new router but when you unplug your router you get the same speeds so uh you might have to call your ISP and have them check your cable's.

Mattzilla's Nat is Strict=Owned

MattZilla20 03-25-2007 11:21 PM

K Wood, I can get into my admin page for the router. The Model is "Linksys BEFSR41" with the latest firmware upgrade...I have no idea what you're talking about forwarding ports though

**And Guyzea... it's open now, eat horse cock

***Update.... I tested my xbox's network again and it is now "Open"

MattZilla20 03-25-2007 11:29 PM

Okay, I think I may have figured out what you were saying, in the "administration" tab UPnP was disabled, so i enabled it, is that what I need to do?

**NAT is back to moderate after I enable UPnP*

W00D 03-26-2007 07:16 PM

upnp is called universal plug and play and it should automatically foward the ports to the router, i used to have the 8 port version of that router and it kinda got flakey and i had to get rid of it, have you tried playing 360 directly connected to your cable modem. see if people find you as laggy or whatnot, cause if they don't then you might have to replace your router. sometimes if they are old they just get weird and flakey, like guyzea's mom.

enabling uPnP on the old router i used to have BESFR81 made the router get upset and have some issues... replaced with DGL-4300 and havent had a problem since.
